Here’s a snapshot of just some of the fascinating yet practical information and advice you’ll find in this book
Quality Time with Your Cockatiel
Cockatiels are intelligent and social birds that thrive on interpersonal interaction. A tame cockatiel needs to spend an hour a day outside its cage. It can be either interactive time, when you are actively holding it, talking to it, and scratching its head and neck. Or, it can be passive time, when you let the bird sit on your shoulder, preen your hair, and watch what you’re doing.
Body Language
A cockatiel’s crest is like a barometer for its mood. The crest of feathers at the top of its head normally stands at about a 75-degree angle. This means that the cockatiel is feeling comfortable and relaxed. When something exciting happens, the crest pops upright, almost perpendicular to the head, indicating interest, happiness, and perhaps, surprise. You’ll probably notice this when you first enter the room in the morning; it means that your cockatiel is happy to see you.
Will It Talk?
Cockatiels can talk — but most of them don’t. If you want a bird that is likely to greet you in your own language, a cockatiel is probably not the bird for you. Instead of talking, many cockatiels whistle and chirp their way through words. You might hear the correct number of syllables and stresses within the phrase so that you know what they’re trying to say, but they never quite manage to articulate it.
Diet and Nutrition
Avocado Alert!
While cockatiels thrive on eating most fruits and vegetables, there is one major exception: avocados. While avocados are harmless to humans, they are toxic to exotic birds such as cockatiels. Never feed your cockatiel avocados or foods that are made with avocado, such as guacamole.
